In Rediscover Lent, Matthew Kelly has set three main goals: to raise morale among Catholics, to explore the genius in Catholicism, and to engage disengaged Catholics in a special way. Our spiritual heritage is rich in wisdom and practice, he writes. "If we can embrace this heritage and adapt it to the modern context, we will begin again to thrive as the spiritual people God intended us to be--both individually and as a Church."
Kelly, an internationally known speaker and author of more than a dozen books, organizes Rediscover Lent around seven pillars of Catholic spirituality:
Confession
Daily prayer
The Mass
The bible
Fasting
Spiritual reading
The rosary
He describes these pillars as "anchors of our faith that combine two thousand years of spiritual wisdom into a handful of spiritual exercises." The daily format consists of Scripture citations, a quotation from one passage, reflection, meditation, and prayer.
For example, the material for the second week of Lent focuses on daily prayer. Throughout the week we learn that Kelly began a serious habit of prayer nearly 20 years ago. His life changed when he began to pray for 10 minutes a day. And he prays for three reasons: to make sense of things, to live deeply and deliberately, and "to build up the kind of inner density required to prevent the culture from swallowing me up."
The title for Friday of the second week of Lent is Make Time to Pray. In the reflection Kelly suggests that others also begin by praying 10 minutes each day and increase the time gradually. He advocates keeping a record of time spent in prayer on a daily basis, a practice that he follows, making notes on paper throughout the day and tallying up the time at the end of each week.
