This book picks up in the aftermath of the previous volume, "The Return of the Master." Newcomer Laurence Campbell handles art duties on the first story, "Wasteland," as Johann, Nichols, and Gervesh get stranded in a monster-ridden wasteland while on a rescue mission to recover Lehane's team from Chicago (last seen in volume 5, "The Pickens County Horror & Others"). This story was my favourite of the two, drawing to a powerful conclusion.
The second story, from which this volume gets its title, "A Cold Day in Hell," covers several important plot beats, including setting up Abe Sapien for his solo series which began with last month's trade, "Dark and Terrible and The Last Race of Man." It also focuses on Giarocco, Iosif, and Varvara, characters I rather enjoy. It's a short story, but a good one.
Overall, this is very much a middle book, setting the stage for some grander arcs to follow. And as it's picking up on plots from volumes 3, 5, and 6, it's not really a book that stands alone. This is the seventh volume in an ongoing story. And as always, it features an excellent sketchbook section.

It's a BPRD book, what's not to love? The only thing I don't like about this is that they don't come out often enough.
