The editors of the "Insider's Guide" understand that there is no such thing as the "Best College"...each high school student must find the college that is the "best fit" for their own personality, learning style, and goals. A student who would love Wesleyan University would most likely be miserable at Brigham Young University...and vice versa.
The "Insider's Guide" is one of four or five books that seek to capture the special flavor of each college...those aspects of college life that make Dartmouth very different from Swarthmore and make Georgia very different from Georgia Tech. The editors have done a good job of using student surveys and interviews to provide useful "personality" profiles of each college...yes, the profiles are often five years old, but the personality of a college does not change much year to year.
As good as this book is, the Tanabe "Best Colleges" book is better: Tanabe's profiles have more depth and include updated data.
Four years at a private college today costs more than $200,000 and at a public college can cost more than $100,000. A huge investment of time and money, yet a third of college freshman never earn a college degree...most of the students who fail to earn a degree were at a college that was a "bad fit".
So, I suggest that high school students and their parents buy three or four college guides to select the 10 or 15 colleges that look like a "good fit". Then visit as many of those schools as possible before applying. After being accepted to several colleges, go on "over night" visits to find out which college feels right to be "home" for the next four years.
The "Insider's Guide" has several weak points.
